In a shocking incident on Saturday, May 18, 2024, gunmen kidnapped the Paramount Ruler of Mbo Local Government Area (LGA) in Akwa Ibom state, HRM Ogwong Okon A. Abang, from his palace in Ebughu.

The abductors have yet to contact the family for a possible ransom, but the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the monarch's abduction. ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, reported that the Commissioner of Police, Ayilara Waheed Adedamola, along with other service commanders and the Commissioner for Internal Security, have traveled to Mbo to assess the situation.

"I can confirm that the CP and other service commanders, along with the Commissioner for Internal Security, were there and addressed the press," ASP John stated.

This kidnapping follows closely on the heels of a series of abductions in the region. Just days ago, medical doctors in the state went on strike to protest the kidnapping of their colleague, Dr. John Robbin Esu, who remains in captivity nearly three weeks after his abduction.

Additionally, last week, the wife of Chief Asukwo Eweme Ulap Okon, a prominent political figure known as Levile, was kidnapped in Oron, further heightening concerns about the security situation in Akwa Ibom.

These incidents have sparked widespread fear and anxiety among residents, as the wave of kidnappings continues to disrupt lives and threaten the safety of prominent figures in the state. Authorities are under increasing pressure to address the rising insecurity and ensure the safe return of the abducted individuals.
