Osun: NFVCB Launches School Clubs to Promote Media Safety

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has launched Media Literacy Clubs across selected secondary schools in Osun State as part of a broader initiative to educate young Nigerians on responsible media consumption and critical engagement with media content.

Launched under the theme “Making Safer Choices and Safeguarding Young Minds”, the project aims to foster media literacy among students, promote the consumption of age-appropriate content, and equip them with skills to navigate today’s fast-evolving media landscape.

The pilot phase of the initiative has begun in four secondary schools, with 30 student ambassadors and three coordinating teachers actively participating. The clubs will operate as extracurricular groups within the schools, focusing on guiding students in understanding film classifications, content advisories, and the overall value chain of the film and media industry.

Speaking during the official flag-off, NFVCB Deputy Director at the Osun Centre, Mr Paul Aliwon, highlighted that the Media Literacy Clubs will serve as platforms for educating students on the responsibilities of media consumers. He explained that participants will act as youth ambassadors of the Board, advocating for safe content engagement both online and offline.

“The students will be exposed to the basics of media classification, encouraged to think critically about what they watch, and mentored on how to spread awareness among their peers,” Aliwon said.

In a goodwill message, the Executive Director and Chief Executive of the NFVCB, Dr Shaibu Husseini, noted that the initiative is not only about education but also about youth empowerment and mentorship. He stated that members of the clubs would have the opportunity to interact with top actors and industry professionals and participate in inter-school competitions and collaborative activities.

Dr Husseini added that the programme also provides a dedicated WhatsApp support line for students to receive guidance and share experiences, ensuring sustained engagement beyond the school environment.

“This is part of our long-term strategy to build a media-conscious generation that can make informed decisions in an era saturated with content of varying quality and impact,” he said.

The NFVCB Media Literacy Clubs are expected to expand to more schools across Nigeria in subsequent phases, as the Board intensifies its efforts to safeguard young minds through proactive, education-driven initiatives.
