Orengo Speaks up on Health Rumors, India Hospital Visit

Siaya Governor James Orengo has finally broken his silence on the wave of health-related rumors that dominated social media and political circles for months, dismissing claims of illness as unfounded.

Speaking during a televised interview with NTV on Monday, the Governor clarified that his recent absence from the public eye was not due to an emergency medical crisis, but rather a planned trip to India for routine wellness check-ups and leisure.

“I’m well, but I was in India, where I spent some time with friends,” Governor Orengo stated. He further explained that he had visited Chennai for medical examinations that he undergoes regularly as part of his healthcare routine.

The clarification comes after a period of intense speculation that began in mid-2025. Following his last public appearance at a Senate committee hearing on June 23, the Governor’s prolonged absence triggered concern in Siaya and across the country.

The rumor mill reached a fever pitch in early August when a forged resignation letter began circulating on digital platforms.

The fake document, which claimed Orengo was stepping down to attend to “personal health challenges,” was swiftly flagged and debunked by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. At the time, party officials urged the public to ignore the misinformation and remain focused.

Orengo noted that he chose not to engage with the online chatter when it first emerged. Instead, he made a strategic return to the public arena during the funeral of veteran politician and gender rights pioneer Phoebe Asiyo in Homa Bay.

During that service, which was attended by high-profile leaders including President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, the Governor reassured his supporters of his vitality. He told the gathered mourners that he was very much alive and intended to continue serving his full term.

The Governor’s recent remarks are seen as a move to stabilize political nerves in Siaya, where critics had previously alleged a “leadership vacuum” during his absence. While in India, Orengo maintained that he remained briefed on county affairs, despite the distance.
