Ondo poll: Police arrest two with illegal APC membership register

The Ondo State Police Command on Wednesday said it has arrested two persons who were allegedly in possession of illegal register of the All Progressives Congress.

This came barely three days before the governorship primary of the ruling party, which is coming up on Saturday, April 20.

The APC governorship primary is scheduled to hold on Saturday, April 20, while the party’s screening committee cleared all 16 aspirants that would be participating in the primary.

In a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, the suspects were arrested in their hideouts with a booklet that contained the list of names of the party members.

Odunlami said the suspects were helping the command with useful information to assist the command in arresting other people who might be involved in such an act.

Odunlami said, ” On Wednesday, 17th April 2024, the police received an intel that one Mr Ariyo, a transporter in Ondo town was registering APC Party members at his residence ahead of the party primaries slated for 20th of April, 2024

“Police personnel from Yaba Divisional Headquarters ( Ondo town) led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police visited the house and recovered some items from the scene.”

The police spokesman listed some of the items found in possession of the suspects including APC party’s registration booklets, a list of names of purported party members of Ward 7 Ondo and 53 passport photographs of different individuals.

Others are a jotter containing names, two exercise books with names and phone numbers of people, as well as two slips of a registered form.

“Two suspects have been arrested and are assisting the police with necessary information to apprehend others involved in this cynicism.” the PPRO stated.

In the statement, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Abayomi Oladipo, admonished all political aspirants to caution their supporters whose acts can stir the hornet’s nest in the state.

He also ordered a total clamp down on incendiaries no matter whose ox is gored, saying the command had spread its tentacles to all nooks and crannies of the state to ensure the safety of lives and property and peaceful conduct of the party primaries in the state.
