Olusegun Obasanjo is an elder statesman in Nigeria. He is one of the many people who shaped Nigeria’s politics. As an officer of the Nigerian Army, he served in the Congo Crisis and the Nigerian Civil War. The 85-year-old retired general is at the crux of Nigeria’s history.

He played an important role during the Nigerian Civil War, leading the army division in Port Harcourt. The success of his troop in Operation Tail Wind on 12 January 1970 led to the surrender of the Biafran leaders.

General Olusegun Obasanjo ruled Nigeria during two different periods. The first was between 1976 and 1979 as the Military Head of State after succeeding Murtala Muhammed who was killed in a deadly coup. His second stint was between 1999 and 2007 in democratic civilian rule.

This brings the total of his ruling days to 11 years. Baba Obasanjo is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Olusegun Obasanjo was born in Ibogun Olaogun, British Nigeria. He was born on 5 March 1937. He was the first of nine children. He began his education at the age of 11 after spending his early years doing agricultural labour. After three years, in 1951, he moved on to the Baptist Day School in the Owu quarter of Abeokuta. In 1952 he transferred to the Baptist Boys’ High School, also in the town. His school fees were partly financed by state grants. Obasanjo did well academically, and at school became a keen member of the local Boy Scouts. 

Though there is no evidence that he was involved in politics during this period, he rejected the name Matthew as a form of protest against colonialism.

Obasanjo joined the Military in March 1958 to further his education. This gave him an opportunity to learn and earn a salary. He was based at the Regular Officers Training School at Teshie in Ghana.

In September 1958, he was transferred to Mons Officer Cadet School in England for additional training. He returned to Nigeria in 1959 and was posted to Kaduna as an infantry subaltern of the fifth battalion. The fifth battalion was mobilized to the Congo as part of a UN peacekeeping force. They returned to Nigeria in 1961. 

Nine years later, Obasanjo played a crucial role in the Nigerian Civil War, leading two operations that led to the surrender of Biafra leaders.
