Ohakim’s Legacy Still Inspires Imo, Group Urges 2027 Return

As former Governor pays hospital bills for less-privileged patients

The Director-General of the Bring Back Ohakim Organisation (BBO), Captain Bishop Johnson, has hailed former Imo State Governor, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim, for what he described as a lasting legacy of visionary leadership and people-centred governance, while calling on him to consider returning to public office in 2027.

Speaking at a ceremony marking Dr. Ohakim’s 69th birthday and celebrating his legacy in Owerri , Imo State capital on Tuesday, Johnson said the former governor’s administration from 2007 to 2011 laid enduring foundations for the socio-economic development of Imo State through infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, environmental renewal, and job creation.

According to him, landmark initiatives such as the Clean and Green Programme, road infrastructure development, educational reforms, agricultural programmes, healthcare expansion, industrial development, and youth employment schemes continue to impact the lives of Imo people more than a decade after Ohakim left office.

He described Dr. Ohakim as a disciplined administrator and a leader with a deep understanding of governance and security, noting that his experience and strategic leadership remain relevant to addressing the state’s current challenges.

Johnson further disclosed that a grassroots campaign urging the former governor to contest the 2027 governorship election is gaining momentum across Imo State and among supporters in the diaspora.

He said the movement is driven by ordinary citizens, including professionals, market women, traders, youths, elders and civil society groups, who believe Ohakim’s return would promote justice, equity, good governance, security and sustainable development.

Describing the campaign as a genuine expression of the people’s aspirations rather than a politically sponsored initiative, Johnson said supporters have continued to mobilise endorsements and consultations across the state and beyond.

He prayed for God to grant Dr. Ohakim good health, wisdom and strength, expressing confidence that his legacy of service would continue to inspire future generations.

Speaking also, Chairman of the occasion and former governorship candidate in Imo State, Osmond Ukanacho said the people that attended the ceremony are the faithful ones who God will use to do the work in due time.

He described Ohakim as one that knows the way and will lead the way.

In his appreciation, the celebrant, Chief Dr Ikedi Ohakim who spoke virtually, said he has had the privilege of working with his supporters through many complex and demanding path amid challenges, adding that they all navigated the challenges with professionalism, commitment, and a shared determination to achieve the best outcomes.

Chief Ohakim emphasized that the friendships and bonds built are far more important than any office or position.

“We are brothers and sisters. We have come to understand and support one another. The relationship we have built here is truly special, and it is one I will cherish for the rest of my life.

“I am deeply humbled by the honour you have shown me today. Words alone cannot fully express my appreciation. Thank you for your kindness, your support, and everything you have done for me over the years.

“I will always remain grateful, and I will carry these memories with me wherever I go. May God bless each and every one of you”, he prayed.

Earlier, the Bring Back Ohakim team has visited Imo Specialist Hospital, Owerri where the birthday celebrant had directed the team to pay bills of patients who are not able to pay after being discharged.

Receiving the team, Mrs Ohaegbulam Augusta Head of Admin Imo Specialist Hospital thanked Chief Ohakim for his generosity and prayed for long life and God to grant his heart desires

Chief Dr Emma Ohakim who represented the former Governor said as a Christian, Chief Ikedi Ohakim felt it is better to celebrate his birthday by touching the lives of the less privileged.
