Officials have asked residents near the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador to evacuate as a wildfire burns nearby. The provincial government says people living in parts of the Paradise suburb must leave immediately. Paradise is part of the St. John's metropolitan area, and home to about 23,000 people. Officials have also declared a state of emergency in Paradise and the neighbouring town of Conception Bay South, as well as the St. John's neighbourhoods of Galway and Southlands. The fire burning roughly 15 kilometres south of St. John’s ignited on Monday afternoon and grew to roughly two square kilometres by that evening. Another fire has erupted near Spaniard's Bay, N.L., roughly 25 km southwest of a raging wildfire that has forced about 3,000 people from their homes. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 12, 2025.
