Nwabali apologises after Super Eagles lost to DR Congo in playoff final

Stanley Nwabali has voiced disappointment after the Super Eagles failed to secure a place in the Intercontinental playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria were defeated 4-3 on penalties by the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sunday night’s playoff final in Rabat.

Despite the Super Eagles taking the early lead, DR Congo dominated much of the second half and extra time, creating several chances against a visibly fatigued Nigerian side but failing to convert.

In the shootout, Semi Ajayi missed the decisive kick in sudden death. Before that, Jerome Akor, Bruno Onyemaechi and Chidera Ejuke scored their penalties, while Nwabali made two crucial saves to keep Nigeria in contention.

The Chippa United goalkeeper took to Instagram to apologise to fans, describing the outcome as “a painful defeat.”

“Painful! We all did our best for the badge, thought our best wasn’t enough. I was once a fan and understand how it feels giving you a disappointing night, we take full responsibility.”
