NNPC Extends Petrol Discount, Says Initiative Does Not Amount to Subsidy Restoration

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) has reaffirmed that its petrol discount initiative is designed to provide temporary relief to Nigerians amid rising global crude oil prices and the resulting pressure on domestic petrol prices, insisting that the measure does not represent a return to petroleum subsidy.

The company said the initiative was intended to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs on households, businesses and the wider economy, particularly as global oil market uncertainties linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continue to influence petroleum prices.

In a statement issued by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, NNPC Limited said it recognised the effects of higher petrol prices on the daily lives of Nigerians, including increased transportation costs and the expenses associated with running businesses.

The company explained that the discount was introduced to provide direct relief to customers during the current period of elevated fuel prices, while maintaining commercially responsible operations.

The clarification followed a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, 2026, regarding efforts to address the economic implications of rising fuel prices.

NNPC Limited said it remained committed to working with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to mitigate the impact of prevailing market conditions on Nigerians.

According to the company, the petrol discount was initially introduced on October 1, 2026, to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The initiative was subsequently extended across NNPC Retail stations nationwide as part of efforts to provide additional relief to consumers.

However, the company maintained that the discount should not be interpreted as the reintroduction of petroleum subsidy, stressing that it was a customer-focused intervention rather than a reversal of the government’s market-based petroleum pricing framework.

NNPC Limited further clarified that the initiative applied specifically to its retail outlets and did not establish a uniform pump price for petrol across the country.

It explained that the discount did not change the broader pricing arrangement governing petroleum products in Nigeria, where pump prices remain subject to market conditions.

The company said the initiative was consistent with efforts to offer practical support to consumers during a period of heightened uncertainty in the international oil market without abandoning the commercial principles guiding its operations.

NNPC Limited also reiterated its commitment to ensuring a reliable supply of petroleum products across its retail network, noting that maintaining product availability and providing responsible customer service remained key priorities.

It urged Nigerians to disregard interpretations suggesting that the discount amounted to a restoration of petrol subsidy, emphasising the need for the public to understand the scope and duration of the initiative.

The company added that it would continue to communicate clearly about its products, prices and customer relief programmes to enable consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.

NNPC Limited expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their continued patronage and support, assuring customers that it would sustain efforts to provide reliable supplies while exploring commercially responsible ways to ease the burden of rising fuel costs.
