Nissan’s 2027 Frontier Sport Edition Brings A New Look For The PRO-4X Curious

The new Sport Edition gives Frontier SV buyers a tougher look without the PRO-4X price, though nothing changes mechanically

Nissan’s 2027 Frontier Sport Edition Brings A New Look For The PRO-4X Curious
  • Nissan gave the 2027 Frontier a tougher Sport Edition appearance.
  • PRO-4X styling cues now appear on the more mainstream Frontier SV.
  • The pickup keeps its V6 and body-on-frame setup as rivals go turbo.

For years now, the Nissan Frontier has felt a little like the midsize truck segment’s lovable dinosaur. While rivals chase turbocharged four-cylinders, giant touchscreens, hybrid systems, and increasingly luxury-car-like cabins, Nissan keeps showing up with a naturally aspirated V6, a body-on-frame chassis, and the sort of straightforward attitude that feels refreshingly old school.

Now, for 2027, Nissan is leaning even harder into that rugged image with a new Sport Edition package designed to give regular Frontier buyers a taste of PRO-4X attitude without fully committing to the hardcore off-road trim.

Put another way, here’s a truck that looks like it can do some hardcore off-roading, even if it can’t actually manage it. Does that make it potentially the choice of a poser? Perhaps. Does it still make complete sense for Nissan to offer? Also yes.

To be fair, aside from standard 4WD, this package does add legitimately useful off-road equipment. It includes black 17-inch off-road-style wheels wrapped in 265/70R17 Hankook Dynapro all-terrain tires, along with an aluminum skid plate, LED fog lights, and front accent lighting.

Visually, it borrows heavily from the PRO-X and PRO-4X playbook. There’s a black lower front fascia, black grille, black mirrors, and special “Sport” bedside and tailgate badging. Inside, Nissan adds yellow contrast stitching to help separate it from ordinary SV models.

Again, all of this makes total sense. Buyers clearly want their truck to look rugged. Every single truck-selling brand offers a trim, a package, or multiples of both that heavily skew toward off-roading. Up until now, Nissan had the Pro-X and Pro-4X along with the Roush Pro-4X. This new Sport model caters to those on the other end of the Frontier pricing spectrum.

Under the hood, nothing changes, and depending on your perspective, that’s either a good thing or a missed opportunity. Every 2027 Frontier still gets Nissan’s 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V6, making 310 horsepower (231 kW) and 281 lb-ft (381 Nm) of torque. The engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and can tow up to 7,150 pounds in properly equipped configurations. Again, 4WD isn’t standard.

What’s nice about the Frontier is that it’s available with King Cab and Crew Cab configurations along with two bed lengths. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but Nissan says the 2027 Frontier will reach dealers later this summer.
