Nike has announced a groundbreaking innovation in sports technology called Project Amplify, which it describes as “the world’s first powered footwear system.” Unlike high-performance racing shoes designed for elite athletes, Project Amplify is built for everyday runners and fitness enthusiasts who want to move faster and farther with less effort.

What is Project Amplify?

Project Amplify is a wearable robotic system that attaches to the lower leg, working like a powered calf muscle to support movement. Nike developed this technology in partnership with robotics company Dephy. The device uses a combination of motors, sensors, and a rechargeable battery to boost the natural motion of the foot during running or walking.

Nike says the goal is not to replace athletic effort, but to assist movement, similar to how electric bikes support pedaling. Users still maintain control of their pace, but the device makes movement smoother and less tiring.

How It Works

The device straps around the ankle like a brace
A lightweight motor and drive belt provide a power boost
Sensors detect movement and adjust assistance in real time
The rechargeable battery powers the device during runs and walks

Nike says Project Amplify is best suited for people running at a 10 to 12-minute mile pace (moderate running speed), making it ideal for fitness runners, commuters, and everyday athletes.

Who Is It For?

Nike emphasizes that Project Amplify isn’t designed for professionals chasing race records. Instead, it targets everyday people looking for comfort, support, and endurance especially those recovering from injuries or trying to build consistency in their fitness routines.

Still in Development

The wearable system has been in testing for several years with over 400 athletes, but it’s not yet available for sale. Nike says it plans to bring Project Amplify to the market “in the coming years” as testing continues and performance improves.
