Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary: Federal Government declares October 1 public holiday

The Federal Government has announced that Wednesday, 1 October 2025 will be observed as a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government.

The minister, in a statement signed by Dr Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, extended warm congratulations to Nigerians, both within the country and abroad.

A Call for Unity and Strength

In his message, Dr Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to hold firmly to the values of patriotism and togetherness. He spoke of the resilience that has kept Nigeria standing tall since the historic year of 1960. His words carried an encouragement, a nudge to keep faith and believe in a better tomorrow.

Renewed Hope and National Growth

The minister further called on Nigerians to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. This vision, according to him, rests on three pillars:

  • National rebirth
  • Economic growth
  • Shared prosperity

He expressed confidence that with collective effort, Nigeria will continue to move forward in peace and progress.

Closing Note

As the day approaches, the minister wished every Nigerian a happy and memorable Independence Day celebration. Sixty-five years may feel like a long road, yet it is also a reminder of how far the nation has come, and how much further it can still go.
