The much anticipated 20th edition of the Nigeria Oil & Gas Industry Games (NOGIG) kicked off yesterday, with a vibrant and inspiring opening ceremony at the Indoor Sports Hall of Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration and camaraderie among the nation’s oil and gas professionals.

Engr Sulaiman Sulaiman, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, highlighted the event’s importance in promoting wellness, teamwork, and unity within the industry.

In his address, Sulaiman welcomed representatives from 15 participating companies who will compete in 13 sporting events over the next week. “This edition brings together our industry in a way that underscores our strength and collaborative spirit,” he said, reflecting on the scale and ambition of this year’s Games.

The Chairman took a moment to express his gratitude to the Grand Patron of NOGIG, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., as well as to the Chief Executives and management teams from all participating organisations. “Your prioritisation of staff wellness, despite the demanding operational commitments, demonstrates a powerful truth — that our people remain our greatest asset,” he stated, emphasising the importance of employee health and well-being in driving operational success.

Sulaiman assured participants of the event’s thorough preparation, detailing robust security measures and safety protocols established to ensure a secure environment for all. “Comprehensive security arrangements have been made in collaboration with relevant agencies, and fully equipped medical teams will be on standby throughout the Games,” he said, reiterating the commitment to providing a safe and fair competition.

Moreover, he encouraged all participants to uphold the spirit of NOGIG, which transcends mere competition. “We are not professional athletes; we are professionals who understand that a healthy workforce drives operational excellence. Let discipline and respect define our interactions, and let fairness guide every match,” he urged, setting the tone for a week of sportsmanship and collaboration.

As the Games commence, Sulaiman’s message resonated with the audience, reinforcing the idea that while competitors on the field, the industry remains united in its mission to power Nigeria. “Together, we will deliver a Games worthy of our collective reputation,” he concluded, leaving participants inspired and eager to make their mark in this prestigious event.

The 20th NOGIG promises to be a celebration not only of athletic prowess but also of the unity and resilience of the Nigerian oil and gas sector, showcasing that collaboration is key to driving success in any endeavour.

An impressive contingent of no fewer than 1,200 athletes, representing various prominent companies within the sector will compete for honours across 13 diverse sporting disciplines during the one week long event.

The majority of the sporting events will unfold at the prestigious Moshood Abiola National Stadium, a fitting venue for such a grand occasion. However, the intricacies of the snooker competition will be expertly hosted at the E12 Club in Wuse, offering a dedicated arena for cue sport enthusiasts.
