NFF Hands Augustine Eguavoen Interim Super Falcons Job Ahead of Olympic Qualifiers

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen as interim head coach of the Super Falcons ahead of Nigeria’s 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign.

Eguavoen will lead the women’s national team in their crucial two-legged second-round Olympic qualifier against Comoros in October.

He will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, head coach of Nasarawa Amazons. The technical team will also include former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf and former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa.

Nigeria will open its Olympic qualifying campaign against Comoros, with both legs scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.

The first leg is billed for October 9, while the return leg will be played on October 13.

The Super Falcons received a bye into the second round as one of the highest-ranked teams in the qualifying series.

Comoros, meanwhile, reached the second round after recording a 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan.

Nigeria must progress through four rounds of two-legged knockout ties to secure one of Africa’s two available places in the women’s football tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games.

A victory over Comoros would send the Falcons into the third round, scheduled for early 2027, where they would face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco.

Eguavoen’s appointment marks the first time in his managerial career that he will take charge of a women’s national team.

His emergence comes weeks after Justine Madugu was dismissed as head coach of the Super Falcons alongside his technical crew.

The decision followed Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, ending the Falcons’ record of appearing at every edition of the tournament since its inauguration in 1991.

Eguavoen will now be tasked with restoring confidence in the team and guiding the Falcons through a demanding Olympic qualifying campaign.
