Shock, grief and anger swept through Tema Community One on Sunday, January 4, 2025, after residents uncovered the body of a newborn baby dumped inside a major sewage tunnel near the Standard Chartered Bank.

What began as a routine effort to protect the neighbourhood from worsening sanitation problems quickly turned into a heartbreaking discovery that has left many residents shaken.

For days, people living in the area had complained about a blocked sewage system that caused dirty water to spill onto nearby streets.

Determined to prevent a health crisis, a group of volunteers came together to clear the tunnel manually and restore the free flow of waste.

As they removed accumulated debris from the underground channel, the workers pulled out a heavy black polythene bag lodged deep within the blockage.

At first, many assumed it was just more refuse. Moments later, their shock set in.

Inside the bag was the body of a newborn baby, believed to have been abandoned shortly after birth. News of the discovery spread quickly, drawing a large crowd to the scene.

Some residents stood in silence, others wept openly, while many voiced anger and condemnation towards whoever could commit such an act.

Meanwhile, police have since launched an investigation into the matter.
