With the 2027 General Election barely over a year away, top presidential aspirants have been aligning with the right camps to boost their chances of emerging victorious.

For President William Ruto, he is working with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which is the party with the second-highest number of elected MPs after his own UDA party. Ruto is banking on the support base where the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga enjoyed loyalty in previous elections, hoping it will back him in his quest for the presidency.

On the other hand, the United Opposition, led by the likes of Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Fred Matiang’i, is yet to name its flagbearer. However, they insist that when the time is right, they will announce the candidate who will face Ruto in 2027.

Now, with Kenyans supporting both camps eager to cast their votes in a year’s time, Mizani Africa conducted an online poll to provide a sample of how voting patterns might look during the general election.

Mizani Africa, which conducts polls both online and on the ground, recently carried out a survey asking Kenyans which presidential candidate they believe would win if elections were held today.

According to the survey, Mizani included four top aspirants likely to be on the ballot: President William Ruto, Senator Edwin Sifuna, Fred Matiang’i, and Kalonzo Musyoka.

The poll, which was open for 24 hours from April 1 to 2, recorded a total of 3,077 online voter.

As seen by Times Digital Kenya, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna led the poll, receiving 46% of the votes, followed by President William Ruto, who trailed at 26%.

Surprisingly, the United Opposition’s two top principals, Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i, garnered 16% and 11% of the votes, respectively.

While Mizani Africa, describing themselves as the top-ranked predictor of the 2022 presidential election, had projected that President Ruto would win with 50.5%, the actual result differed by only 0.1 percentage points, confirming Ruto’s victory at 50.5%.

The organization has been conducting polls across a variety of seats in the country, though most of their focus has been on the presidential race.

Is Edwin Sifuna a new force?

Although Edwin Sifuna has not declared interest in the top seat, a majority of his supporters would like to see him in the contest. He is among the young, vibrant politicians in the opposition who have been harsh critics of President William Ruto.

While political dynamics are unpredictable, Sifuna could emerge as a key contender ahead of the 2027 General Election.
