NDC Says Peter Obi’s Name Uploaded to INEC Portal, Files Appeal Over Court Ruling

The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that the name of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has been uploaded to the nomination portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Monday, in which the party leader said the NDC had also filed an appeal against a recent court judgment and submitted an application for a stay of execution, both of which have been served on the INEC Chairman and the commission.

According to the statement, the party has been granted access to the INEC portal to upload the names of its candidates in compliance with the commission’s electoral timetable.

“My name and that of the presidential candidate have been uploaded to the INEC portal, while that of the vice-presidential candidate will be done tomorrow upon completion of the deposition. The process is also ongoing for other candidates,” the statement said.

The party maintained that it remains a duly registered political organisation that has participated in all stages of the electoral process and insisted that its primary elections were conducted under the supervision and observation of INEC officials.

It stated that the emergence of candidates for various elective positions had been concluded and that only the administrative process of transmitting their names to the electoral commission remained.

The NDC noted that, in accordance with the electoral timetable released by INEC, political parties have until July 11 to submit the names of candidates for National Assembly elections and until July 17 for governorship and State House of Assembly candidates.

The party leadership urged members and supporters to remain calm, expressing confidence that there was sufficient time to complete the nomination process for all candidates.

Acknowledging disagreements that emerged during the conduct of its primaries, the party disclosed that reconciliation efforts had already commenced to foster unity among aspirants, stakeholders and members nationwide.

It assured unsuccessful aspirants of active participation in campaign structures, committees and other party activities, describing them as critical to the party’s grassroots strength and future success.

The National Leader congratulated all candidates, members and supporters of the NDC and called for the protection and strengthening of Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system.

The statement also commended INEC for what it described as professionalism in handling the party’s registration and electoral processes, while urging the commission, the judiciary and security agencies to remain impartial in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.

According to the party, with the appeal and related applications now before the courts, it expects the judiciary to determine the matter in accordance with the rule of law and established legal procedures.
