The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, has released an official statement addressing the wave of conversations and allegations circulating on social media following the tragic death of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, fondly known as Nanya.

Nanya sadly passed away on January 31, 2026, after suffering severe neurotoxic complications from a snake bite. Her death sparked widespread online reactions, with some claims suggesting that life-saving anti-snake venom was unavailable at the hospital when she was brought in for treatment.

However, in a statement issued on February 1, 2026, FMC Jabi firmly refuted those allegations.

According to the hospital management, Nanya was attended to immediately upon arrival. Medical personnel reportedly swung into action without delay, providing urgent care that included resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent anti-snake venom.

The statement explained that following a rapid clinical assessment, doctors discovered that she had already developed severe neurotoxic complications as a result of the snake bite. Plans were quickly made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for advanced management.

Tragically, before the transfer could be completed, her condition deteriorated suddenly.
Despite intensive efforts by the medical team — including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other emergency life-saving procedures — Nanya could not be revived.

FMC Jabi emphasized that claims of anti-venom unavailability and alleged negligence are completely unfounded. The hospital stressed that its medical staff acted professionally, promptly, and in line with standard emergency care protocols throughout the ordeal.
The management concluded by reaffirming its commitment to quality healthcare delivery while extending condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this painful time.
