A Nairobi court has released blogger and human rights activist Boniface Mulinge Muteti on Ksh15,000 cash bail after prosecutors accused him of posting allegedly false statements on X about politicians amassing stolen wealth.

Muteti, 30, appeared at Milimani Law Courts on Monday, facing one criminal charge under Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act No. 5 of 2018.

Prosecutors allege that on December 6, 2025, Muteti used his X account, @mulinge_muteti, to share content he knew was false and that could potentially incite fear, alarm, or violence among the public.

According to the prosecution, his tweets claimed that politicians had not worked, innovated, or invented anything, and that all their wealth was allegedly stolen from Kenyans and should be returned. Authorities argued that the posts were intended to provoke public unrest and violence.

Muteti pleaded not guilty to the charge. His lawyer asked the court for lenient bail terms, arguing that Muteti poses no flight risk and would attend all future court hearings. The defence also requested access to all evidence and witness statements the prosecution intends to use during the trial.

The court granted Muteti cash bail of Ksh15,000, requiring him to provide a contact person. The magistrate also directed the prosecution to furnish all materials, including witness statements, ahead of the trial.

Muteti was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Serious Crimes Unit on December 12, 2025, and spent the weekend at Muthaiga Police Station after police initially declined to release him on bail.

The case is set for pre-trial mention on December 30, 2025.
