My wife is owing me a lot of money. I’m not talking about the kind of money wives take and pretend to have forgotten they borrowed from you. This one was a loan she took from me.

Her brother was traveling abroad and needed something to top up. She came to me and asked for money first, and I said I wasn’t in a position to give out any amount to support his travel because I have a home to take care of. Later, she came asking for a loan. She said, “When he gets there, he would start paying.”

I gave her the money in the presence of her mother and her brother. I gave them GHC10,000, and they agreed to start paying three months after he got there. A year later, I haven’t received a dime from her. Whenever I ask for it, she gives me excuses that her brother has suffered, that he hasn’t gotten a job, and all those excuses.

Out of frustration and anger, I asked her mother about it, and she told me her son had sent the money long ago. In fact, her son paid the money just as we agreed, but it was my wife who didn’t give the money to me.

I got so angry when I asked her about it, and she confirmed that indeed she had received the money but had used it to resolve some issues. I asked what those issues were, and she said she wouldn’t tell me. Fine. Then give me my money. Instead, all she does is blackmail me, telling me, “Are you not ashamed that you’re demanding money from your wife as if she were an outsider?”

It’s not fair, and because of that, I harbor anger in this house. Immediately I see her face, the little smile on my face vanishes. Our rent is due very soon. I won’t pay the rent unless she pays it. If she doesn’t pay, I’ll pack my things and leave the house to my parents so she also finds a place to go. And once that happens, that will be the end of our marriage. Wherever she goes will be where she stays forever. I don’t mind going for the kids and leaving her to live her life.

What do you think about this idea? Honestly, I’m sick and tired of her deceit and the way she gaslights me whenever the issue of the money comes up. I need a place to cool my head.
