'My dad always told me I was a failure' - Spyro opens up

Afrobeats star Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, better known as Spyro, has opened up about the emotional struggles he faced before fame, revealing how his father’s harsh words, calling him a failure once made him doubt his worth.

In a heartfelt chat with TV host Frank Edoho, the Who Is Your Guy singer shared that growing up, he constantly battled low self-esteem because of his father’s constant criticism. Spyro recalled that his father often called him a failure, and over time, he began to believe it.

“My dad always told me I was a failure, and I began to believe it,” Spyro admitted, adding that those words stayed with him for years and shaped how he viewed himself and his future.

The singer said that things only began to change when he developed a deeper relationship with God. Through faith and prayer, Spyro explained, he started to see himself differently and gained the strength to keep pushing through tough times.

“God changed my mindset,” he said. “Prayer and self-belief helped me overcome fear and opened new doors in my career.”

Before his breakthrough in 2022, Spyro almost gave up on music altogether and tried his hand at interior design to survive. But his single “Who Is Your Guy became a massive hit across Africa, touching hearts with its message of friendship and loyalty.

The remix featuring Tiwa Savage in 2023 further elevated his career, winning Best Collaboration at the 16th Headies Awards and proving, as Spyro put it, that faith and persistence truly pay off.
