Mudavadi Clarifies the Relationship Between Kenya and US After Trump’s Win

Prime Cabinet Secretary (CS) and CS for Foreign & Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has commented on the relationship between Kenya and the United States (US) after the re-election of Donald Trump.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mudavadi said the two countries enjoy a diplomatic relationship that transcends the respective sitting Presidents.

Mudavadi said the US has had several Presidents since Kenya gained independence and that has not affected their relations.

“How many Presidents has the US had since 1964 up to now? Therefore, the relationship between Kenya and the US is not about the president who is in power,” he said.

He emphasized Presidents will come and go but the diplomatic relations between Kenya and the US will remain strong.

“The two countries have an international relationship. When the elected president finishes their term, another will come into office,” he said.

“Our relationship is international; it is not just a relationship between presidents.”

Mudavadi Comments on Haiti Mission

Besides, the PCS also commented on the role of the US in the ongoing Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) to Haiti led by the Kenya police.

Mudavadi dismissed claims that the US government influenced Kenya into deploying police officers to the Caribbean nation.

He explained that the United Nations (UN) asked countries to deploy officers to help stabilize Haiti.

He stated that there are other countries that want to deploy their officers to Haiti to complement the efforts of the Kenya police.

“The Kenya police are not in Haiti because of the US. They are there because the UN resolved that Haiti needs help to combat the gangs. Kenya volunteered alongside other countries,” Mudavadi said.

“The US is one of the countries which want to help with the logistics and equipment to support the mission.”

Raila’s AUC Bid

He also gave an update on the campaigns for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.

Mudavadi said the government is pushing to see Rail win the seat since Kenya has never produced a chairperson since the AU was formed.

“When you mention Raila’s name anywhere in Africa, they will tell you they know him as a leader who is qualified to take part in helping African countries on issues to do with diplomacy, peace and security,” Mudavadi said.

He revealed that President William Ruto has talked to various presidents regarding Raila’s bid.

Similarly, he mentioned that officials from his ministry have also been engaging leaders from different countries about Kenya’s bid.

“We are hopeful that if President Ruto leaders our delegation, Raila will be announced as the AUC Chairman in February 2025 in Addis Ababa,” he added.
