MTN ROLLS OUT INDEPENDENCE DAY PACKAGE TO NIGERIANS 

The telecommunication giant in Nigeria, MTN Group Limited has rolled out free call and text packages to Nigerians as part of marking the 2022 Independence Day celebration.

Subscribers to the network were informed on Independence Day that they have been gifted with free calls up to six minutes with loads of national Short Message Services (SMS) to loved ones 

The message reads: "Y'ello! Your first National call up to 6 minutes 20 seconds and 62 National SMS TODAY will be FREE. Happy Independence Nigeria!"

Nigeria gained her independence on 1st October 1960 from British colonial rule. Sir James Wilson Robertson, KT, GCMG, GCVO, KBE, KStJ served as the last colonial governor-general of Nigeria from 1955 to 1960.

An all-Nigerian Executive Council was headed by a Prime minister, Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. On 16 November 1960, Nnamdi Azikiwe became the first governor-general of a federation of three regions of the north, east and west, with Lagos as the Federal Capital. 

Reactions have trailed the freebies offered by the MTN Group. While many hailed the network provider for taking the lead in celebrating the Independence Day, others were however skeptical.

A Twitter user account with the name @oyinnex twitted: "MTN wey no well after the so called free 6:20 mins call i wonder why dem come charge #10:45k for 35secs call on mtn pulse tarrif plan dem don use style bill the free minutes back @MTNNG @MTN180 una no try o"
