What is Moxidectin?

This is a medication that is used to get rid of parasites such as hairworm (Capillaria spp.), roundworm (Ascaridia spp.), and a range of other parasites that feed off birds such as mites and tapeworm. Moxidectin Plus is a combination medication that combines both Moxidectin and Praziquantel. It was developed by Dr. Colin Walker, “The Flying Vet” of the Australian Pigeon Company.

Who should use Moxidectin?

It is intended for owners of pet birds to have a parasitic infection. This tends to be much more frequent in birds that are kept in outdoor aviaries or birds that have been injured and rescued. Some people like to use it every couple of months to keep their flocks parasitic free.

Is Moxidectin safe for birds?

Moxidectin Plus Have fairly large margins for safety and doesn’t affect the quality of the birds’ feathers. It shouldn’t cause your birds to vomit to have diarrhea.

However, it is best to use this once birds that are not underweight or suffering from any other existing illnesses.

How is Moxidectin used in birds?

Humans should avoid getting the liquid onto their hands or in their eyes and they should wash their hands after handling it.

Don’t use it during the breeding season. Otherwise, follow the below instructions:

The liquid should be stored below 25 degrees celsius and keep in a cool, dry place that is not exposed to direct sunlight. Don’t use this liquid in ponds, rivers or other sources of wild water because it is toxic to wildlife and will harm them.

For Pigeons and Finches

It’s a liquid that you can put into the water of birds, which they’ll then drink. Typically 5 to 10 milliliters should be put into 1 liter of water which is then left out for the birds for 1 day or so before being removed.

For Parrots

A dosage of 0.25 to 0.5 ml per 400grams of body weight should be used and may need to be given to the parrot directly.

Both of these instructions for pigeons and finches should then be repeated in 3 to 4 weeks.
