In a tragic incident on Wednesday, two individuals lost their lives in a motorcycle collision in Bhamara of Barako Nijgadh Municipality. The unfortunate event raises serious concerns about the safety of motorcycle riders on the roads, and prompts an urgent need for improved traffic management and rider education.

Details of the Incident

Among the victims was 25-year-old Ricardo Fonseca, who collided with an SUV pulling out of a private driveway. The impact was so severe that Fonseca suffered life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to them in the hospital. The SUV driver, a female, remained at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. Preliminary investigations indicate that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash.

Motorcycle Accidents: A Rising Concern

The incident is part of a worrying trend of increasing motorcycle accidents. In the last three months alone, there were 1,302 road crashes across the country, leading to the deaths of 1,484 people and injuring 2,485 others. Strikingly, motorcycles were involved in the highest number of these accidents, with 579 people dying in 527 motorcycle-related incidents.

Need for Preventative Measures

In light of these alarming statistics, the Safe Crossings Road Foundation (SCRF) has recommended several measures. These include maintaining the ban on motorcycle movement on the Padma Bridge and introducing a similar ban on all highways during Eid travel. The SCRF report also identifies unfit vehicles, unskilled and physically unfit drivers, and inadequate traffic management as major causes of these road crashes.

In a similar incident, 43-year-old Jamie Wilder lost his life when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a car on Old Bell High Road. Despite immediate CPR at the scene, Wilder could not survive his injuries. This incident further underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures to prevent such tragic events.
