More than 9,000 ambulances dispatched for weight-loss and cosmetic procedure emergencies in five years

Ambulances across the UK were dispatched to nearly 9,400 emergencies connected to weight-loss treatments over a five-year period, according to new findings.

The data gathered by the online healthcare provider ZAVA through Freedom of Information requests submitted to all 14 NHS ambulance services shows that between 2020 and 2025, paramedics responded to 9,395 incidents triggered by procedures and products including Brazilian butt lifts, fat-dissolving injections, Lemon Bottle and weight-loss jabs.

That frequency works out at roughly one callout every five hours and 35 minutes.

The figures emerge against a backdrop of widespread demand for quick-fix solutions, with over 45 million people in Britain classified as overweight or obese and 1.6 million having turned to weight-loss injections in the past 12 months alone.

London accounts for the overwhelming majority of those emergencies.

The capital's ambulance service recorded 8,240 callouts tied to weight-loss treatments since 2020, with 2021 proving the peak year at 1,878 incidents.

The concentration of aesthetic clinics in areas such as Harley Street may heighten the likelihood of patients encountering unregulated products or insufficiently trained practitioners.

In the North East, the picture is worsening sharply. Callouts handled by the region's ambulance trust jumped 91 per cent, rising from 34 in 2020 to 65 in 2025.

Nationally, however, the overall number of incidents fell 22 per cent over the period, from 1,894 to 1,476.

ZAVA suggests the decline may be connected to the NHS launch of Wegovy (semaglutide) for weight loss in March 2023, which gave patients access to a safer, regulated alternative.

Callouts dropped 36.5 per cent from their 2022 level the following year.

Unregulated procedures driving many of these emergencies carry severe health risks.

Brazilian butt lifts, performed using either fat transfer or synthetic fillers, have prompted the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons to advise members against carrying them out unless properly trained, working under ultrasound guidance and operating in CQC-regulated premises.

Potential complications range from sepsis and severe bleeding to fat embolism and death.

More than 500 people have contacted the government-backed watchdog Save Face after experiencing problems with liquid BBL procedures, with half reporting sepsis and 39 per cent requiring corrective surgery. Monthly Google searches for BBLs stand at 74,000.

Lemon Bottle, marketed as a "natural" fat-dissolving injectable, can "potentially cause serious harm," according to the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Swiss regulator Swissmedic warned in 2024 that the product has "no medicinal effect."

The counterfeit weight-loss drug trade is also escalating rapidly. FOI data shows that 18,316 illegal or unregulated weight-loss and diabetes medications were intercepted at UK borders between January 2024 and June 2025 — an average of 34 per day.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency carried out its largest ever operation on May 28, recovering 12,000 doses of unlicensed weight-loss medicines at a site in Northamptonshire where retatrutide, tirzepatide and other synthetic peptides were being manufactured and distributed.

Dr Kathryn Basford at ZAVA warned: "Obtaining weight-loss medications outside of licensed healthcare organisations is extremely risky, especially through online marketplaces and social platforms like eBay, Facebook or Amazon.

"Unlike registered pharmacies, these platforms do not follow the same stringent safety protocols, which means anyone can sell products without proper verification of their source, ingredients or manufacturing standards."

Experts are now raising the alarm about counterfeit Wegovy tablets as the pill version of the drug prepares to enter the UK market.

Tablets are far simpler and cheaper to forge than injection pens, requiring only basic pill-press equipment, whereas replicating injectable devices demands considerably more sophisticated manufacturing capability.

Consumers also face greater difficulty identifying fake pills, since counterfeit injection pens are more prone to visible defects and malfunctions.

Dr Basford advised buyers to verify any online pharmacy's General Pharmaceutical Council registration number before purchasing.

Red flags for counterfeit tablets include suspiciously low prices, packaging errors such as misspellings or blurred printing, missing batch numbers or expiry dates, and the absence of any health consultation or dosing guidance prior to sale.
