Why Microsoft Is Ending Support for Windows 10

Microsoft is encouraging users to transition to Windows 11, labeling 2025 as the “year of the Windows 11 PC refresh.” According to Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, upgrading a Windows 10 PC is more important than buying a new TV or phone this year.

The decision to end support aligns with Microsoft’s goal to modernize its operating system ecosystem. Millions of machines, however, cannot upgrade due to strict hardware requirements like the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0. Microsoft has confirmed that this requirement is “non-negotiable.”

What Happens After October 14, 2025?

Although Office apps on Windows 10 will no longer be supported after October 14, 2025, they will not stop working immediately. Microsoft states the apps will continue to function but warns users of potential performance and reliability issues over time.

Additionally, for the first time, Microsoft is offering Extended Security Updates to consumers:

• Cost for Consumers: $30 for one additional year of updates.
• For Businesses: Up to three years of extended updates are available for purchase.

Encouraging Windows 11 Adoption

Despite Microsoft’s push, Windows 11 adoption still lags behind Windows 10. To accelerate the transition, Microsoft has introduced full-screen prompts encouraging users to buy new PCs that meet the requirements for Windows 11.
