Messi Declines Invitation to Biden’s Medal of Freedom Ceremony

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi was notably absent from a prestigious ceremony at the White House on Sunday, where he was scheduled to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

The ceremony, which celebrated individuals for their significant contributions to society, included Hollywood icons like Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox among the honorees. However, Messi’s absence raised questions, as neither he nor a representative attended to accept the award.

A statement issued on Messi’s behalf explained, “The White House informed FIFA, which then notified the club at the end of December that Leo was to receive this recognition. Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House expressing that he is deeply honored and privileged to receive this award, but due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments, he would not be able to attend. He thanked the gesture and expressed hope to meet with the President in the near future.”

Messi was recognized for his extraordinary achievements on the field and his charity work, with the White House noting, “He supports healthcare and education programs for children worldwide through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.”
