Ghanaian game developer and digital marketer Mathias Asamoah has unveiled CityQuest, an ambitious tourism and STEM-focused gaming platform designed to showcase Ghana’s culture, history and natural attractions through interactive digital adventures and real-life experiences.

The locally developed platform aims to redefine how people discover Ghana by blending education, tourism and entertainment into immersive gameplay. Rather than presenting Ghana as a destination to simply visit, CityQuest encourages players to explore, learn and connect with the country’s rich heritage through engaging adventures inspired by real locations.

According to Asamoah, the project is driven by a vision to position Ghana as one of the world’s most exciting tourism destinations while inspiring a new generation to appreciate and protect their environment.

“My dream is that one day children across Ghana won’t just read about our country—they’ll play through it, explore it, protect it and be proud of it,” he said.

Inspired by Cape Coast’s Beauty—and Its Challenges

The idea for CityQuest was born during a walk along the beaches of Cape Coast more than a year ago.

While captivated by the coastline’s breathtaking scenery and historical significance, Asamoah was equally struck by the environmental degradation caused by plastic waste, neglect and open defecation.

The experience prompted a simple but profound question: How can people protect places they have never truly learned to appreciate?

That question became the foundation of CityQuest, a platform designed to help players fall in love with Ghana by experiencing its stories rather than simply reading about them.

From a Family of Teachers to Digital Education

Born into a family of educators, Asamoah says teaching has always been part of his life. His parents, grandparents and several relatives all worked in education, exposing him to the transformative power of learning from an early age.

However, he also recognised the limitations of traditional classroom methods and wondered whether technology could make learning more engaging.

That thinking led to the creation of CityQuest, which combines tourism with STEM education, allowing players to solve scientific, environmental and cultural challenges while exploring digital versions of Ghanaian locations.

Instead of relying solely on textbooks, the platform encourages discovery through gameplay, turning Ghana itself into a living classroom.

Blending Tourism with Education

CityQuest takes players on adventures across Ghana, introducing them to beaches, landmarks, wildlife, traditions and historical sites while integrating lessons in science, engineering, environmental sustainability and local culture.

The platform is designed to appeal to both young learners and tourists by demonstrating that education and tourism can work hand in hand.

With growing concerns about environmental issues such as flooding and pollution across the country, Asamoah believes interactive learning can help raise awareness and encourage responsible stewardship of Ghana’s natural resources.

Taking the Experience Beyond the Screen

In addition to its digital game, CityQuest is expanding into live tourism experiences through CityQuest Originals.

One offering, the Accra Party Bus Adventure, turns a city tour into a travelling game show where participants solve puzzles and complete challenges inspired by Accra’s iconic landmarks.

Another experience, First Day in Ghana, transforms the historic streets of Jamestown into an interactive game board, inviting participants to uncover hidden locations, meet local characters and complete missions based on everyday life in one of Accra’s oldest communities.

Revenue generated from these live experiences will support the continued development of CityQuest’s digital platform and future adventures.

Introducing ‘Kruya’

The first digital chapter of CityQuest, titled Kruya, is now available online.

Set along Labadi Beach, the adventure was inspired by YouTube personality IShowSpeed‘s widely shared visit to Ghana, particularly his memorable stop at the Shea Butter Museum.

Named after the energetic “Kruya Kruya” chants heard during that experience, the game captures Ghana’s warmth, culture and vibrant atmosphere while introducing players to STEM concepts, environmental lessons and local stories through interactive gameplay.

Asamoah hopes Kruya will be the first in a series of adventures spanning all 16 regions of Ghana before eventually expanding across Africa.

Building a Platform for Africa

Beyond gaming, Asamoah envisions CityQuest as a collaborative platform that brings together educators, tourism authorities, government institutions, environmental organisations, artists, technology partners, investors and local communities.

His long-term ambition is to establish an African tourism-edutainment platform capable of showcasing the continent’s stories to a global audience while making learning more engaging for young people.

“If CityQuest can inspire even one young person to see Ghana with fresh eyes,” he said, “then every challenge and every year spent building it will have been worthwhile.”

The first CityQuest adventure, Kruya, is now available at www.cityquest.africa, where visitors can also access the project’s official press kit containing media assets, artwork, logos and promotional materials.

CityQuest combines interactive digital games with live gamified tourism experiences, using storytelling, STEM education and cultural exploration to encourage people to rediscover Ghana and its heritage.

As its tagline declares: “Because Ghana is not just a place to see. It’s an adventure waiting to be experienced.”
