Massive Fire Erupts at Chevron Oil Refinery in El Segundo, Los Angeles

A massive fire erupted Thursday night at the Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo, just outside Los Angeles, prompting emergency shelter orders for nearby residents.

The blaze began at around 9:30 p.m., with residents reporting a loud blast and towering flames that could be seen miles away.

Eyewitness Kevin Mohr, who was at Manhattan Beach, described the moment:
“This was 300-foot flames… I didn’t know if a plane crashed or there was an earthquake or both.”

Authorities confirmed that officers and firefighters rushed to the refinery after receiving multiple calls about the explosion. For safety, Manhattan Beach fire officials issued a three-hour shelter-in-place order, advising residents to keep windows shut and bring “all people and pets indoors.”

Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell, who represents El Segundo, said the fire had been contained to a single section of the refinery.
Speaking to KCAL, Mitchell stated: “It has been contained and there is no cause for alarm for El Segundo or the surrounding areas,”

She added: “We were able to respond with Chevron fire immediately, our station is about a .25 mile away from the gates of Chevron,”

“Obviously, we are very concerned, and there is a lot of investigative work to be done to see what has happened.”

Confirming the news, The California Gov. Gavin Newsom said: “Our office is coordinating in real time with local and state agencies to protect the surrounding community and ensure public safety,”
