In a recent video on TVC, Biodun Sowunmi emphasized the importance of democratic processes, asserting that changes in government should occur through the ballot box, given our constitutional democracy. He expressed concerns over the recent protests, which he described as having sparked days of rage and anxiety about potential violence. Sowunmi noted that the security services were on high alert due to these disturbances.

During the protests, Sowunmi observed that some participants were waving foreign flags, including the Russian flag, and calling for a military takeover—actions he deemed unacceptable in a constitutional democracy. He supported the Council of State’s endorsement of government policies and its condemnation of those advocating for unlawful regime changes.

He also voiced disappointment with Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar for endorsing the protests, even after they had been hijacked. He acknowledged that while protesting is a constitutional right, it is crucial for leaders to call for calm rather than escalating violence. Sowunmi stressed that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, endorsing efforts to undermine constitutional governance is unjustifiable, especially in the absence of evidence supporting such drastic measures.

During the protest, we observed people waving foreign flags, such as the Russian flag, and actively calling for a military takeover. Such actions are unacceptable in any constitutional democracy. Therefore, the Council of State members were right to endorse the government’s policies and condemn those calling for an unlawful takeover.”

Some may argue that it was within their rights to encourage Nigerians to protest, as protesting is a constitutional right. However, I recall that Peter Obi or others could have called for calm rather than violence. While protesting is an integral part of democracy, calling for an unconstitutional change of government should never be supported, and there was no evidence to justify such actions…… Continue Reading
