FAVOUR ISHEMBER, Abuja

Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has stressed that the involvement of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in cultural programmes goes well beyond mere entertainment.

She highlighted that such engagements play a crucial role in advancing youth empowerment and fostering national unity through creative expression, reaffirming the FCT Administration’s dedication to these ideals.

Dr. Mahmoud made the remarks on Tuesday during the unveiling of the 2026 Quarterly Drama Series and NYSC Arts and Culture Exhibition.

She described the initiative as an important avenue for showcasing and nurturing the rich talents of corps members.

In her words, the programme represents a shared resolve to preserve and promote Nigeria’s cultural heritage while strengthening a sense of national identity among citizens.

According to the Minister, “The event serves as a reflection of a collective commitment to promoting Nigerian heritage and national identity.

“Drama is recognized as a powerful communication tool that shapes societal values and inspires necessary dialogue.

“These artistic expressions act as a bridge, uniting citizens across ethnic, religious, and social divides.”

The Minister urged the performers and visual artists to keep deploying their creative abilities as powerful tools for storytelling and fostering national unity, emphasizing that their contributions are vital in shaping narratives centered on hope and progress.

She also praised the FCT Social Development Secretariat for creating an enabling platform that reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging youthful potential for sustainable development.

In his remarks, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Social Development Secretariat, Hon. Ibrahim Aminu, described the stage production as a “mirror of society,” aimed at provoking thought, challenging existing mindsets, and inspiring meaningful change.

He added that the Arts and Crafts Exhibition held alongside the performance highlights the creativity and cultural wealth of corps members, further underscoring their significance as contributors to economic development.

The FCT Administration reiterated its resolve to continue backing initiatives that positively engage young people and instill enduring values.

The occasion also featured a stage performance titled “KALANGU,” a concept that denotes effective communication within families and organisations.

The programme wrapped up with an appeal to residents of the FCT to sustain their support for the arts, recognizing its role as a key driver of social transformation and a source of wholesome entertainment.

For a better society
