Lotus has backtracked on its plans to go purely electric within a few years. Now it appears that even existing electric models will be powered by combustion engines.

A year ago, Lotus CEO Feng Qingfeng revealed that its EV plans were being scaled back. This means the goal of selling only electric cars by 2028 will be dropped. Instead, Lotus wants to focus on “Super Hybrid” technology: plug-in hybrid powertrains that, thanks to 900V technology, can deliver a fresh dose of power in an instant.

Now it turns out this technology isn’t reserved for new models. The Lotus Eletre will also get such a powertrain, as Autocar understands from Qingfeng. This is remarkable, as the Eletre is currently only available with fully electric powertrains. Apparently, a combustion engine is also possible. In addition to the Eletre, two other plug-in hybrid models will be launched, including a brand-new SUV, due in 2027. The Lotus Emeya may also get a combustion engine. The first Lotus plug-in hybrid is expected to be launched here in about a year.
