Parents of Litein Boys High School have filed a case in court challenging a Sh49,000 fine imposed on each student after recent unrest, accusing the school administration of repeatedly exploiting them through unjustified charges after every strike.

Represented by lawyers Danstan Omari and Shadrack Wambui, the parents argue that the latest levy is excessive and part of a persistent pattern of financial exploitation by the institution’s management.

According to the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the frequent unrest at Litein Boys’ High School has become a costly burden on parents, raising questions about the school’s accountability and motives.

“The first strike, parents paid without questioning. The second, they did the same,” said lawyer Danstan Omari while addressing journalists. “This is the third strike, and the parents believe the principal and the management are instigating these strikes for the benefit of payment,” he added.

The PTA insists that part of the costs, such as rebuilding a burnt dormitory, should be covered using government capitation funds rather than additional contributions from parents.

They further claim that the Ksh69 million total demanded from parents was never subjected to any transparent or accountable process, making the entire levy both unfair and unlawful.

In response to the disputed levy, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has demanded a comprehensive audit of all destroyed property and funds collected after previous incidents at Litein Boys High School. Based on their independent assessment, the parents argue that each student should contribute no more than Ksh10,000, not the Ksh49,699 demanded by the school administration.

“The parents have proposed, from their own assessment, that each student should pay only KSh10,000. These teachers want to exploit the children, and that is why we are moving to court immediately to stop this exploitation,” said lawyer Danstan Omari.

Omari also faulted the school’s phased reopening plan, arguing that it unfairly punishes Form Four candidates preparing for national exams.

“The third term is a term for national examinations. The Form Fours are being told to report last. When will they prepare for their exams? This is a national crisis,” he said.

He added that the legal team would seek an immediate court order to protect students and parents from what they describe as systemic exploitation by the school’s management.

The controversy comes barely three weeks after the institution was closed indefinitely, following a violent student protest that resulted in the destruction of property worth millions and the burning of a dormitory.
