‎In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer and public commentator Dele Farotimi has supported growing calls for the removal of Joash Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following renewed protests and controversy over his alleged political links.

‎”That Tinubu retains the power to appoint Amupitan’s successor should not be the basis for not demanding Amupitan’s removal, that argument is foolish and self defeating. Let Tinubu appoint Seyi or Oluremi if he wants, but remove Amupitan first,” he wrote.

‎In his post, Farotimi argued that the power of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appoint a replacement should not be used as an excuse to keep Amupitan in office, he described such reasoning as unhelpful and warned that it could weaken public trust in the electoral system.

‎The protests began after an old social media post linked to Amupitan resurfaced online, in the post, he was alleged to have expressed views seen by critics as supportive of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), reacting to the situation, Farotimi insisted that the credibility of Independent National Electoral Commission must be protected at all times.

‎He stated that any doubts about the impartiality of its leadership should be addressed quickly to avoid damaging public confidence and further stated that calls for Amupitan’s removal should be considered on their merit, rather than dismissed because of who might be appointed next.

‎According to him, ensuring fairness in the electoral body is more important than speculating about possible successors, he noted that Nigerians have the right to demand accountability from public officials, especially those in sensitive positions like election management and stated that maintaining trust in INEC is critical for the stability of democracy in Nigeria……See More
