LCU Basic Certificate Course in Geriatric Care Announced

Lead City University, Ibadan, has opened its doors to a new programme aimed at one of the fastest-growing needs in our society: caring for the elderly. The Basic Certificate Course in Geriatric Care is set to begin on 29th September 2025 and will run for six weeks. At the end of it, participants will walk away with a certificate that carries the university’s stamp of approval.

Why This Course Matters

The elderly population is increasing by the day, and with that comes fresh challenges for families, hospitals, and community health centres. This training is built to:

  • Give healthcare workers and caregivers practical geriatric skills.
  • Improve the way older adults are cared for, whether at home, in clinics, or community centres.
  • Encourage healthy ageing while also preparing for dignified end-of-life support.

The focus is less on books and more on hands-on knowledge that can be applied right away.

Course Highlights

What’s on the table? Quite a lot, actually. The curriculum covers:

  • Understanding how ageing affects the body and mind.
  • Managing common conditions that come with old age.
  • Balancing diet, mental health, and social needs.
  • Approaches to palliative and end-of-life care.
  • Practical methods for community and home-based support.
  • Workshops, case studies, and peer sessions that bring real-life learning.

It is not just theory, there will be practice, group work, and shared experiences.

Who Should Attend

The organisers have cast the net wide. The course is designed for:

  • Primary health workers.
  • Nurses and community health officers.
  • Family members who provide home care.
  • Faith-based health providers.
  • NGO and CBO staff who focus on elder support.

If you find yourself in any of these roles, this training has your name written all over it.

Benefits of Joining

Apart from the certificate itself, participants will gain:

  • Practical, skill-driven training they can put to work immediately.
  • Mentorship from seasoned facilitators who have walked the path.
  • Access to networks and further opportunities in geriatric care.

And yes, the programme is designed to leave you more confident about caring for older adults.
