Latest Update in Boniface Kariuki Shooting Case as Court Makes New Move

The High Court has denied bail to police officer Klinzy Baraza in a closely watched shooting case, citing security concerns, witness protection risks, and the unique circumstances surrounding the incident.

In its ruling, the court said the fatal shooting had already attracted intense public attention, making the matter highly sensitive. Judges noted that the family of the deceased has reportedly faced harassment, including a barrage of unsolicited phone calls and messages since the incident.

Baraza stands accused of shooting Boniface Kariuki in Nairobi’s Central Business District on June 17, 2025. At the time of the incident, Kariuki was selling masks outside Imenti House when a bullet struck him in the head. He later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment in hospital.

The court further observed that Baraza’s position as a serving police officer gives him authority and access that could interfere with witnesses or compromise ongoing investigations if he were released on bail.

Relying on submissions from the prosecution, the court found that compelling reasons existed to keep the accused in custody. It ruled that granting bail could put victims and witnesses at risk and potentially threaten public order and security.

Although Baraza asked the court for leniency, arguing that he would comply with all bail conditions and that he has a young family depending on him, the judges held that these personal considerations did not outweigh the broader risks identified.

To ensure the matter proceeds without unnecessary delay, the trial court committed to fast-tracking the case. Officials scheduled the file to appear before the court registry on February 17, 2026, meaning Baraza will remain in custody as the trial process moves forward.
