LAMATA Warns Against Unauthorized Use of BRT Lanes, Threatens Strict Penalties

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has issued a stern warning to motorists against illegally using Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes, pledging strict enforcement of penalties for violators throughout the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, the agency’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, emphasized that only designated BRT buses and vehicles operating under LAMATA-regulated franchises are allowed to use the dedicated lanes.

He added that the only exceptions are emergency response vehicles, including ambulances and fire trucks, and only when attending to urgent situations.

Ojelabi expressed concern over the increasing abuse of BRT lanes by unauthorized users, including private motorists, some military and paramilitary personnel, and vehicles belonging to local governments and Local Council Development Areas.

According to him, such violations compromise the efficiency and safety of the BRT system, which was designed to provide fast, reliable, and secure mass transit for commuters in Lagos.

“The misuse of the lanes disrupts scheduled operations, endangers passengers and other road users, contributes to traffic congestion, and weakens ongoing efforts to improve urban mobility in the state,” he said.

LAMATA stressed that the regulations governing BRT lane usage remain in full effect and will be strictly enforced. Offenders, irrespective of their status, will be apprehended and prosecuted in line with Lagos traffic laws. Penalties may include fines, vehicle impoundment, and other legal sanctions.

The agency called on all road users, including security agencies and government institutions, to comply with the rules and support efforts to maintain an efficient transport system.

Ojelabi reaffirmed LAMATA’s commitment to ensuring safety, order, and efficiency across Lagos’ transport network, warning that the authority “would not hesitate to take decisive action against violators.”
