The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) said it is exploring the use of either biogas or biodiesel for public transport operations to help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in Lagos State.

A statement by the agency on Wednesday April 17th revealed that consultants, CPCS Transcom Limited (CTL) are conducting a study being funded by Swedfund, for LAMATA.

“The study entails investigating the use of biogas, biodiesel, renewable diesel and bioethanol as potential replacements for traditional diesel fuel in our bus fleet.”

“The recent progress report presented a detailed analysis of options, including characteristics, infrastructure needs, and implementation timelines.”

LAMATA, led by Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, revealed that the agency was particularly interested in biogas, an eco-friendly fuel, if it proves compatible with its existing fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.

The agency said its focus on alternative fuels reflects its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and adopting sustainable practices in line with international best practices.

“By exploring alternative fuels, LAMATA aims to create a cleaner, more environmentally friendly transportation system for Lagos. The move is considered a big step towards cleaner transportation as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the society.”
