Lagos: Lekki Apartments, Public Toilets Shut Down Over Illegal Sewage Discharge

The Lagos State Government has shut down multiple facilities, including residential apartments in Lekki, for illegally releasing untreated sewage into public drains, violating state environmental regulations.

On Friday, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office carried out an enforcement operation targeting properties and public facilities that were contaminating the environment and threatening public health.

Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, stated on Saturday that six public toilet facilities in Idi-Araba were shut down after investigations revealed they regularly discharged raw sewage directly into public drainage systems.

“These perpetrators have been found to be in the habit of committing this illegality instead of engaging accredited sewage desludgers to evacuate their septic tanks,” Wahab said.

The commissioner further stated that Patience Diekola Court on Olugborogo Street, Lekki, Eti-Osa, and Brickle Apartment 4 on Fatai Arobieke Street, Lekki, were also closed.

He explained that the facilities were penalized for intentionally releasing untreated wastewater into public drainage systems.

Regarding Brickle Apartment 4, Wahab revealed that the management broke the law by obstructing government officials and refusing them access during routine inspections.

He emphasised that both actions clearly violated the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

The commissioner cautioned that any form of environmental pollution poses serious threats to public health and will not be tolerated by the government.

He affirmed that anyone found violating environmental laws would be subjected to stringent penalties.

“Every form of environmental pollution endangers public health, and perpetrators will be appropriately sanctioned in line with the provisions of the law,” Wahab stated.

He called on residents of the state to manage wastewater responsibly and avoid behaviors that threaten public health and sanitation.

The commissioner further urged residents to hire only licensed sewage desludging services for septic tank maintenance, emphasising that protecting the environment is a collective duty.

“Lagosians are therefore enjoined to embrace proper wastewater management and hygiene practices to safeguard public health and ensure environmental sustainability,” Wahab added.
