Kwara 2027: Pareto Optimality and The Youth

By AbdulRasheed Akogun (Shoboi)

I was in a private discussion with a budding star Joan Dominic a few days ago, after our chanced meeting at the University of Ilorin, where I was one of the facilitators at the ElevateHer 2.0, one of the pet projects of my darling sister, Barr. Títílopé Ọmọ Anífowóse

Although, I can’t seem to recollect what prompted it, I sha had to fall back to my less pronounced Economics Degree, to buttress and elucidate, on the point I was trying to make and the Pareto postulations came handy.

The concept of Pareto optimality, named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, which is a situation where resources are allocated in the most efficient manner, such that any attempt to improve one individual’s situation does not lead to the  extreme detriment of another.

This principle is often invoked in economics, but its implications extend well beyond market transactions. It promotes the notion of balance, equity, justice, fairness, and mutual benefit. Which resonates deeply within youth community dynamics, as we have in Kwara State today.

As we (youth) navigate our relationships and collaborations, towards enshrining Sustainable Youth Development (SYD), embracing the principles of Pareto optimality is pivotal.

At its core, Pareto optimality highlights the importance of consideration for all involved in any transaction or relationship. It invariably implies that, selfish interest must be killed, for enlightened self interest.

This means understanding that actions,  whether in personal interactions, community engagements, or economic activities, can have ripple effects that impact others and we must care, regardless of being directly affected or otherwise.

When we focus solely on our own advancement at the expense of others, it leads to an inefficient and unsustainable model that ultimately reduces the collective potential of the youth community and society at large.

In the context of mutualism, Pareto optimality advocates for a synergistic approach where all parties benefits in one way or the other, directly and or indirectly.

Accepting that true progress comes from collaboration rather than competition and exploitation, is key to attaining our desired Sustainable Youth Development (SYD).

Exploiting others for personal gain, can yield short-term advantages, but such relationships lack the durability necessary for long-lasting success.

Regardless of our artificial divides, we must build a framework of relationships, that seed trust and solidarity. If we prioritize helping one another and fostering each other’s strengths, we’ll create an environment conducive for collective growths, on individual terms.

This community-centric (youth) approach not only enriches individual lives but also improves our collective capacity to effect positive change within community, just like the growing clamour for Sustainable Youth Development.

The principle of Pareto optimality posits that when one draws value from another without reciprocating, the situation becomes sub-optimal for the one being used. Thus, parasitic relationships must be jettisoned, no matter how temporarily inconvient, for symbiotic relationships.

It’s on this note, I commend our friends and comrades, in the opposition, especially a jolly good fellow Odunjo Adio and others, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State, for finally rising to the occasion and largely taking over the leadership of their party, that’s one of the benefits of the Otoge, that we progressive Comrades championed, which culminated in the resounding routing of the Saraki dynasty, which our PDP brothers belongs to. If they don’t thank and acknowledge us, like agama lizards, we’ll take our credit, this is not Dettol advert.

Even though, they’ll still come distant third (I’m rooting for ADC to come second ), behind my party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the import of the PDP congresses ain’t lost on us the progressive youths, not minding some wuru wuru to the answer emergence of most of them, yet it’s still an improvement on the SOP of the Saraki dynasty, therefore I wish them well, they’ll meet us on the field of intellectual engagement, where we’ve always win and 2027 won’t be an exception.

That said, for us in the Kwara APC youth family, we’ve gone past showing capacity at the peripheral level, where our PDP brothers are just berthing. We’re now strategically negotiating the driver seat, for one of us, who not only tick all necessary leadership boxes of Experience, Network, Competence, Capacity and Compassion, he also comes tops on the Equity, Fairness and Justice chart and not forgetting his unassailable status as a youth torchbearer in the State.

I enjoin our friends in the opposition PDP and ADC, to take a cue from the progressive youths and push one of them forward come 2027.

One of us, is better than none of us. Sustainable Youth Development (SYD) must be the priority of all Kwara and Kwarans come 2027.

However, the concept of Pareto optimality must be upheld, in ensuring that those not within the Youth constituency ain’t alienated. Both the wisdom of Solomon and strength of goliath which is embedded in the youth must coalesce to achieve our desired destination.

Until then, we must consolidate and commit to continuous learning. Through education (informal and formal), we can better our lot, horn our skills and strategically position ourselves, individually and collectively.

We should all shun exploitative tendencies, bullying those with divergent opinion takes us no where. Embracing mutualism, self worth and never settle for less attitude, while respecting the right to dissent, is the sure link to our desired destination.
