King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language Launches Development Terminology Dictionary to Standardize Humanitarian and Development Terms

The King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language has launched the “Development Terminology Dictionary,” a specialized reference designed to standardize terminology used in development, reconstruction, relief and humanitarian work, while improving professional communication and strengthening specialized Arabic content.

The dictionary was launched in cooperation with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, the Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, and the King Salman Foundation, as part of the Academy’s broader efforts to develop specialized dictionaries and address the linguistic needs of different sectors.

A Unified Reference for Development and Humanitarian Sectors

The Development Terminology Dictionary brings together terminology and concepts related to development and humanitarian work, including sustainable development, reconstruction, emergency response, relief, displacement and asylum, infrastructure, and community empowerment.

The initiative aims to provide a unified scientific and linguistic reference for professionals working across these fields, helping standardize terminology used in reports, studies, development programs and humanitarian projects.

The dictionary is intended to serve government entities, nonprofit organizations, regional and international institutions involved in sustainable development, as well as researchers, practitioners and policymakers.

Strengthening Specialized Arabic Content

Dr. Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Washmi, Secretary-General of the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language, said specialized dictionary-making is one of the Academy’s key areas of expertise because of its role in establishing reliable linguistic references that support different sectors.

He emphasized the importance of specialized dictionaries in standardizing terminology, improving the quality of Arabic content and facilitating effective communication among professionals working in specialized fields.

The Development Terminology Dictionary forms part of a wider series of specialized dictionaries launched by the Academy in partnership with national entities to address terminology needs across a range of sectors.

Covering Multiple Development and Humanitarian Fields

The dictionary extends beyond terminology directly associated with relief operations, covering a broader range of concepts used across the development and humanitarian ecosystem.

Its areas include reconstruction, sustainable development, emergency response, relief operations, asylum and displacement, infrastructure and community empowerment.

This breadth enables the dictionary to serve professionals involved in development and humanitarian programs, particularly in environments where emergency relief, reconstruction and long-term development efforts overlap.

Standardizing terminology can also help reduce linguistic inconsistencies when preparing professional documents, correspondence and reports, particularly among local institutions and regional and international organizations.

Available Through the Siwar Platform

The King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language has made the Development Terminology Dictionary available through “Siwar,” its digital platform for specialized linguistic dictionaries.

The platform was established and is supervised by the Academy and currently includes more than 38 specialized dictionaries covering a variety of fields. Its content is continuously updated to enrich Arabic linguistic resources and expand access to specialized terminology.

Making the dictionary available digitally gives researchers, professionals and organizations working in development and humanitarian sectors access to a unified terminology reference, reducing reliance on fragmented sources when looking for standardized Arabic equivalents of specialized concepts.

Part of a Broader Effort to Develop Specialized Dictionaries

The launch of the Development Terminology Dictionary is part of the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language’s broader efforts to strengthen the role of Arabic in scientific, knowledge-based and development-related fields.
