Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM) is one of Kenya’s wealthiest churches, enjoying a total asset base of Sh16.46 billion. The church generates at least Sh200 million per month, thanks to its wide network of branches and various business ventures, including schools, a radio station, and a TV station, among others. In this segment, Times Digital Kenya highlights how CITAM manages to generate such a huge amount of money; close to Sh2 billion annually.

What is the history and origin of CITAM?

Christ Is The Answer Ministries dates back to 1952, following the arrival of John McBride from the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC) in Nairobi. He had a vision to establish a church in the country. In 1959, the church was officially founded as the Nairobi Evangelistic Centre by McBride and his fellow PAOC missionaries.

The church initially began with a small service of around 20 to 30 members, mainly Europeans and Canadian expatriates, at Rahimtulla Hall before relocating to Valley Road in 1960, where it is still located to date. Its name was then changed from Nairobi Evangelistic Centre to Nairobi Pentecostal Church. Over the years, the church continued to grow, and in 2003, it adopted a new name, Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM), reflecting its long-term motto, “Christ Is The Answer.”

Today, CITAM operates a total of 38 branches, the majority of which are located in Kenya. Thirty-four assemblies are within the country, while the remaining four are based abroad, including in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Sources of Income

CITAM’s income flows from multiple sources, including offerings, tithes, real estate, media outlets, and schools.

For instance, the church earns a significant amount of money from tithes, offerings, and donations. According to the church’s 2023 financial report, it generated Sh658,982,906, up from Sh555,372,759 in 2022, through tithes, offerings, donations, gifts, and partnership support.

Other notable sources of income include rental revenue amounting to at least Sh12.2 million and interest income of Sh28 million. Additionally, other business units, such as schools, a radio station (Hope FM), and a TV station, collectively contribute over Sh894 million to CITAM’s total income.

All in all, Christ Is The Answer Ministries generates an annual revenue of at least Sh2 billion, translating to approximately Sh166 million per month. In 2020, the church made Sh2.0 billion (about Sh166 million per month), followed by Sh2.4 billion (around Sh200 million per month) in 2021. The following year, 2022, CITAM generated Sh2.9 billion (about Sh242 million per month), which rose to Sh3.28 billion (roughly Sh273 million per month) in 2023.
