At a time when Kenya, alongside many other African countries, faced racism under ongoing colonial rule, a Kenyan man emerged who defied the odds by marrying a white woman.

In what was unheard of when Kenya was under British administration, a black Kenyan, John Kimuyu, tied the knot not with a fellow African or someone from the country, but with a white woman, Ruth Holloway.

Such a union had never happened before, and especially under those circumstances, John Kimuyu and Ruth Holloway’s story was a very big deal. How did these two come together and reach the point of marriage?

Times Digital Kenya takes a look at the love story of John Kimuyu, the first Kenyan to marry a white woman, and how they inspired future generations.

John Kimuyu and Ruth Holloway’s controversial wedding

In the late 1950s, a young Ruth, aged just 19, left for Kenya. She had grown up in the Nottinghamshire mining town of Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

As a missionary, Ruth worked at the “blind institute,” where she eventually met John Kimuyu, who was experiencing eye issues.

As the two regularly crossed paths, they gradually fell in love, but it was a dangerous time in Kenya, as the country battled for independence from the British administration.

Ruth, being a white woman, and John, a black Kenyan, caused a significant controversy. When the two decided to marry, Ruth returned to the United Kingdom to inform her parents and employers of her newfound love and intention to wed.

Ruth was not received well, as the Salvation Army decided to strip her of her job due to her engagement to John Kimuyu.

This did not stop the couple from going ahead with their marriage. While still in the UK, Ruth Holloway bought a wedding ring, baked it into a cake, and smuggled it by ship back to Kenya.

Their wedding sparked controversy, as John Kimuyu became the first black Kenyan to marry a white woman, and Ruth became the first white European to marry a black Kenyan.

Although the wedding itself went smoothly, the registrar who officiated later admitted that he did not agree with the union.

As if that were not enough, news of John Kimuyu and Ruth Holloway’s wedding spread worldwide, being reported on television and in newspapers across Kenya, the UK, and the United States.

Separated

In their few years together, John and Ruth had three children. However, their time as a family was short-lived, as Ruth returned to the United Kingdom with their children, leaving her husband in Kenya.

According to Ndinda Kimuyu, the couple’s eldest child, they believed that a blind man could not secure a job in the UK. As a result, John Kimuyu, her father, had to remain in Kenya, where he worked a switchboard job with the police. Despite the long distance, John and Ruth stayed in touch, with John sending reel-to-reel tape recordings to his wife.

With no signs of reuniting, John Kimuyu remarried twice and eventually passed away in his 90s in 2023. On the other hand, Ruth Holloway died over 30 years ago, having spent several decades in the UK with her children.
