Kenya Airways Asks Passengers to Consider Rebooking Flights as JKIA Crisis Deepens

Kenya Airways has issued a travel advisory to passengers following continued flight disruptions at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The airline has warned that ongoing operational challenges at air traffic control are causing delays of up to four hours on departing flights.

As a result, KQ has adjusted its network and urged travelers to remain flexible and monitor official updates.

The advisory comes amid efforts by the Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) to stabilize operations and minimize the impact on passengers due to the ongoing strike.

As the situation continues to evolve, Kenya Airways has advised its passengers to expect schedule adjustments.

The airline has advised customers to take the following steps:

  • Check their flight status before leaving for the airport
  • Monitor official Kenya Airways communication channels for updates
  • Explore rebooking options through the mobile app or website where necessary

In its statement, Kenya Airways appealed for patience and understanding from its customers, urging them to contact the customer service for assistance.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding as the situation evolves. We request our customers to contact our Customer Excellence team Mobile +254 711 024 747, WhatsApp +254 705 474 747,” stated KQ.

Air Traffic Control Delays and Network Adjustments

Kenya Airways said the current disruptions are largely linked to air traffic control operational delays at JKIA, one of the busiest aviation hubs in East and Central Africa.

The congestion has affected aircraft movements, leading to extended waiting times for take-off and increased pressure on flight schedules.

In response, the airline has adjusted its network to accommodate the delays.

This includes rescheduling certain flights, extending turnaround times, and modifying departure slots to align with available air traffic control capacity.

“Further to yesterday’s update regarding flight disruptions out of JKIA, resulting from air traffic control operational delays, and a statement from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) on its contingency measures, we wish to inform our customers that we are experiencing delays of up to four (4) hours for departures out of JKIA and have adjusted our network accordingly,” the statement read.

The airline has also stated that it will issue Updates through the official communication channels as new information builds up.

JKIA Traffic Disruptions

The confusion and paralysis at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) entered the second day after aviation workers downed their tools on Monday, February 16.

Departures and arrivals were hard hit, leaving passengers in long queues. Aircraft were grounded, and travelers were forced to use road and rail for domestic travel.

Jambojet Airlines has issued a public announcement to its customers, stating that the airline will not resume operations at JKIA.

In a statement dated February 17, the airline stated that the decision is due to the industrial action by KAWU, which has affected air traffic control.

“Kindly do not proceed to the airport for your scheduled flight until you receive a further update from us regarding your flight status. We will continue to provide timely communication via SMS, email, and our official social media platforms as soon as more information becomes available.”

Kenya Airways (KQ) and Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) warned of more delays and schedule changes as operations remain constrained.
