Justin Kodua slams Adenta Kumi arrest as ‘disgrace to rule of law’

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has sharply criticised the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, calling it a “disgrace to the rule of law” and a national embarrassment.

According to Kodua, he received a distress call early Friday morning from Mr. Kumi, who reported that about 20 armed men had surrounded his residence in Adenta, forcefully banging on his gate and demanding he come outside.

Speaking from inside the house, Kumi said he could not identify the men.

“While I was on my way to his home, I got another call from his wife, saying he had been taken away. They only told her he was being taken to an office,” Kodua recounted.

By the time he arrived, Kumi was already gone. Kodua described the scene as shocking.

The front door had been broken down, and a woman in the house had allegedly been struck with the butt of a rifle.

“It’s appalling that anyone especially officers would carry out an arrest this way. What has Adenta Kumi done to deserve this treatment?” he asked.

He explained that Kumi had recently submitted a petition to the President concerning alleged misconduct by members of a judicial committee.

“This is someone exercising his democratic right. Instead of a response, he’s dragged out of his home in the dark of night without explanation.”

Kodua condemned the arrest as a clear act of intimidation and a violation of due process.

“Is this how we treat citizens who speak up? If the authorities had concerns, the proper approach would have been to invite him, not send armed men to raid his home without a warrant.”

At the time of Kodua’s statement, Kumi’s whereabouts were still unknown.

However, the NPP General Secretary confirmed that the team had recorded the license plate of the vehicle used—WE 323-11—and photographed some of the individuals involved.

They were en route to the National Security office to verify whether Kumi was being held there.

Background

The arrest followed Kumi’s submission of a petition to President John Mahama, calling for the dissolution of a committee probing the Chief Justice’s removal.

Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary candidate for Adenta, alleged that three members of the committee of Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Yonni Kulendi held a private meeting with Thaddeus Sory, legal counsel for the petitioner, after the first hearing.

According to Kumi, the meeting occurred at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area on May 15, 2025, and involved discussions related to the ongoing inquiry.

A video purporting to show the meeting has since gone viral, sparking public debate over its authenticity and implications.
