JUST IN: Ronaldo scores as Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in dramatic Round of 32 contest

Portugal have secured their place in the next round after beating Croatia 2-1 in what was a drama filled Round of 32 clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

The first half ended in a goalless draw but Croatia broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute of the game with a goal by Ivan Perisic.

Portugal, however, fought back and levelled the score through a controversial penalty converted by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The strike was Ronaldo’s first-ever goal in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup and his 10th World Cup goal.

Goncalo Ramos then completed the comeback with a late winner to send Portugal into the next round.

Croatia thought they had forced extra time when they found the back of the net late in the contest, but to their disappointment the effort was ruled out for offside.

Captain Luka Modric produced an impressive performance despite the defeat, but the loss marked the end of the veteran midfielder’s World Cup career.

Portugal will now face Spain in the Round of 16 in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the next round.
