It’s been hard to take Darkstate seriously, despite NXT’s efforts to make them appear daunting with spotlights up in the crowd and cool black masks. You can shroud a group in mystery and have them launch attacks at favored wrestlers but eventually you have to deliver the goods.

It finally seemed they were doing that recently, what with booking them to win the tag team titles from beloved big boys Hank & Tank before giving them a legitimate backstory on television. They’ve finally got some depth! We have a reason to take these guys seriously now!

And then the main event of this week’s episode of NXT on the CW happened.

Darkstate was working an eight-man tag team match against NXT Champion Oba Femi, his top challenger Ricky Saints, and the aforementioned former tag champions Hank & Tank. Femi and Saints, predictably enough, couldn’t get along and eventually fought their way right out of the match, giving Darkstate a massive numbers advantage.

Except the boys had an ace up their sleeve, a guy who will appear if only you say his name:

LOL.

LMAO.

LMFAO, even.

The Hendry bit is still fun, I’ll give them that, but doing Darkstate like this after finally establishing the group as worthwhile makes the entire angle a million times funnier.

Shout out to the cameraman for the fantastic work during the segment, though.
