It’s Unscriptural to Command Angels — Joshua Selman

Founder and senior Pastor of Eternity Network International (ENI), also known as Koinonia Ministry, Apostle Joshua Selman, has cautioned Christians against commanding angels.

He gave this caution in a recent message shared online, monitored by Church Times. According to him, believers are not supposed to command angels.

​He said, “That statement about commanding angels is unscriptural. Angels do not respond to you; they respond to the Word of God. When they respond to the Word, it looks like it is you they are responding to.”

​Selman explained that all spirits that are from God—”righteous, clean spirits—are led by a central code, which is the Word of God. They are not just houseboys or housegirls that you command.”

​While noting that preachers sometimes make the erroneous statement that people should command their angels, he said, “It is not in Scripture.”

​He said further, “Angels excel in strength. They obey the Word of God. The reason it looks like they are obeying the saints is because those saints have aligned themselves with the Word of God. So, don’t go around commanding angels.”

​Preachers who urge people to command their angels, according to him, sometimes do that sincerely. “But it is not scriptural. If you see an angel physically, you will almost worship the angel. It is in the Bible. That command is because you have not seen an angel. If you see an angel and the angel stands before you, you will almost worship the angel.”

​He explained further that there are different kinds of angels. “Every believer in Christ has an angel that has been assigned to them. Remember what Jesus said about the angels and children, that ‘their angels are beholding the face of God,'” he said.

​Angels, according to him, “are also assigned to your God-given assignment. Every ministry serving the purpose of God has angels attached to it. There are angels attached to revelation. There are angels that enhance the understanding of certain bodies of knowledge. Gabriel came to give Daniel understanding. The angels of God work in partnership with the Holy Spirit. Angels can be around, but it’s your prayers that attract them to you. There is a special deployment of angels at the instance of intercession. This is where warfare comes in.”
