The Coalition of United Political Parties, Social Democratic Party, and Nigerian Political Science Association have expressed differing views on the Peoples Democratic Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar proposal for a constitutional amendment to establish a six-year single-term rotational presidency.

Reacting to Atiku’s proposal, CUPP national spokesperson, Mark Adebayo, agreed that a six-year single term would reduce the desperation for a second term by any means necessary among incumbents.

He stated, “There are two challenges that this amendment can solve immediately. One is that it will end the desperation for a second term by any means necessary among incumbents. Secondly, it will address the feeling of marginalization experienced by some geopolitical zones in the country.

“If a president knows that he can only serve one term, he is likely to focus on governance issues rather than engage in unethical practices or misuse state resources and authority in a desperate bid for re-election.

“Moreover, a constitutional guarantee that each geopolitical zone can have the opportunity to produce the president will substantially reduce, if not eliminate, the agitations related to the marginalization that we have been witnessing in this country. This feeling of marginalization has been a significant threat to the corporate existence of Nigeria.”
